New Year Open: Baker & Pender both jump new high jump all-comers records

Sun, 10th Jan 16

The second of the Cardiff Met GP indoor series saw some cracking athletics and brilliant results. In this meeting named the New Year open, the high jumping pair of Chris Baker and Barry Pender kick started their 2016’s seasons in style. Both went over 2.26 to increase the Welsh all-comer’s record and hit a European qualifying standard. Both had 3 good attempts at the Rio Olympic standard of 2.29, which could be attacked at the final GP meeting on the 23rd January. Great job by the duo and their coaching and support teams. There was a great showing by our own students with Becca Chapman’s long jump and 60m double, and Sian Swanson also taking the triple jump victory. The distance races proved quality as always in our GP’s with wins for Alex Coomber 800m (1:51.09) Charlotte Cayton-Smith 800m (2;12.65) Mike Wilsmore 1500m (3:48.86) Claire Tarplee (4:16.50) Andrew Wright 3000m (8:20.09) & Rose-Anne Galligan 3000m (9:20.95).
