British & Welsh Records Fall At GP3 Non Thomas Open

Thu, 8th Feb 18

There was another electric atmosphere at our 3rd and final indoor GP meeting on Sunday 4th February. A busy event schedule that included open, masters, South West and Welsh Championship events, was only made possible with the a highly skilled officials team.

The highlights of the day included Tom Marshall breaking the 30 year Welsh 1000m record with 2:21.25. A brilliant 53.70 400m win for GB sprinter Ashleigh Nelson and a fine 60m and long jump double for James Lelliott. The biggest cheer of the day was in the Welsh Athletics 3000m championships, where super pacing from Ieuan Thomas and committed front running from Steve Mitchell, allowed Jake Heyward the perfect platform to sneak inside the 49 year old British Junior 3000m record. Heyward stopped the clock at 8:00.93, against the 8:01.4 (Feb 1968) old figures from the 1972 Olympic Bronze medalist Ian Stewart. A fitting winner of this year’s ‘Non Thomas Performance award’, and presented to Jake by Non’s husband Roger.
